Mixed Indoor Soccer grand final winners, the M&C Parisi Floorboards team.
M&C Parisi Floorboards were crowned Mixed Indoor Soccer champions after defeating Sandvik Sonics 9–3 in the grand final last Wednesday night at the Cobar Youth and Fitness Centre.
Unfortunately Sonics were unable to field a full team, however they still put in a gallant effort.
They worried Floorboards at times, but solid defence and females goals, the Floorboards’ trademarks this season, got them the title. Floorboards took full advantage of having an extra man from the opening whistle.
They created good scoring opportunities, however they could not capitalise and frustration started creeping in as the game when on.
The Floorboards stuck to the game plan of playing counter-attacking soccer and they were rewarded mid-way through the first half when Cheryl Peatey opened the scoring.
Her goal was followed up by another to Zoë Harland.
Floorboards’ 4–nil lead was justly deserved for the early pressure.
Sonics then had the better of the match leading into, and after, half-time.
They turned that pressure into a goal when team captain Paul Gauci found the back of the net.
Unfortunately, a goalkeeper error saw Floorboards with an immediate reply which released some of the pressure.
Don Heather, Floorboards’ goalie, booted the ball out of this own half and it found its way into the goal after going under the opposing goalie’s foot. Floorboards then led 5–1.
Sonics continued pressure and threw everything they had at the Floorboards.
Gauci once again found the back of the net to pull the lead back to three goals. Then it was game on!
The Floorboards’ defence held solid against the Sonics’ onslaught.
They caught Sonics on the counter-attack and wrapped the game up when Mel Mills scored for the Floorboards.
Her goal took the score to 7–2. Mills then put the icing on the cake when she scored again.
Wade Potter scored a consolation goal for Sonics on the final whistle.
It came, when Floorboards’ goalkeeper Roger Munoz, was basking in his self-proclaimed man of the match performance, as Potter shot one past him. The final score was 9–3.
The presentations followed the grand final game with trophies also presented to: Most Goals–Female: Mel Mills (19); Male: Nagaiyakrishna Naidu (28); Best and Fairest–Female: Mel Mills (10 votes); Male: Sean Cox, Baden Smith, Wade Potter, Peter Neale (4 votes each).—Becks
