Euabalong facing dry summer but Cobar has water

Wednesday November 11, 2009

While Euabalong residents face a long dry summer, Cobar’s water situation is looking healthy in the lead up to summer.

Water carting to the villages of Euabalong and Euabalong West is expected to begin this week as flows into the Lachlan River from Wyangala Dam dry up completely.

However the carting is hoped to be a temporary measure with state government funding granted last week to search for and sink emergency bores for the villages.

Cobar Shire Council will also be subsidised by the state government to cart water into the communities.

Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Ray Smith told The Cobar Weekly on Monday staff were currently investigating possible bore sites.

“They have not been able to identify a suitable site as yet,” he said.

He said a public meeting in Euabalong today is hoped to provide more information on the situation.

Harsher water restrictions are likely to be imposed on the village as per state government regulations, possibly restricting residents to 150L per day, per person.

By contrast, Cobar’s water supply has been further improved with state government funding granted for a new ground tank near town.

“This will allow us greater pumping capacity from Nyngan, because we can store more water here, as well as more storage capacity if it rains,” Mr Smith said.

He said Cobar is likely to remain on current water restrictions, which allow watering between the hours of 5pm and 10am.

“We received our full allocation this year and our water storages are basically full, so we are looking okay this summer,” Mr Smith said.
