Many opportunities for Cobar’s growing tourism industry

Members of Cobar’s business community came together on Monday night to discuss the town’s ever-growing tourism industry.
The meeting was called by Cobar Business Association as a forum to develop ideas to continue to grow and support the industry, which is estimated by Cobar Tourism Manager John Martin to be valued at $17million per year.
Business association president Michael Cox said the purpose of the meeting was to “throw ideas around”.
“We want tourists to stay longer and spend stronger, but we have to give them a reason to stay and spend,” Mr Cox said.
The meeting was chaired by Cobar Enterprise Facilitator Mark Workman, who said the meeting aimed to not only bring up ideas to advance tourism, but to create a strategic plan for tourism in the town and to develop a network of people to action ideas.
Business Association member Sharon Harland said all Cobar residents should see themselves as “ambassadors for the town”.
“People don’t realise the value of the tourist dollar to Cobar, so the business association’s role is to change the mindset of the community,” Mrs Harland said.
“A tourist should be able to stop in the street and ask any local for directions,” she said.
