The 2009 annual Copper City Pairs bowls carnival was held over the weekend and was contested by a big field of 26 teams.
Players travelled from Hillston, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Trangie, Nyngan, Parkes, Tamworth, Lake Cargelligo, Darlington Point, Sydney, Warren and the Orb Club to join six local teams on the Services Club greens.
For the first time in the long history of the Copper City Pairs event, two teams finished with the same score of five wins and +87 points.
It was decided that instead of playing an extra five ends to find a winner, the prize money would be divided between the two teams.
Therefore, the South Tamworth father and son team of Mark and Nick Golledge (who entered the event for the first time) along with the Dubbo Railway team of Max Lowe and Keith Hardwicke were declared joint winners.
Third place went Bob Fowler and Les Assef from Tamworth.
The Gilgandra team, which had five wins however were not the overall winners, collected $200 in consolation prize money.
The White Top Taxi-sponsored award for the best card on Saturday was taken out by the Nyngan team of Todd Rope and Matt Thornton, while the best card on Sunday was won by Greg Reko and Kevin Woods of Hillston.
The RSL group took out the combined 1st and 2nd prize money in the bowls Calcutta, while ‘Aka’ Howlett won third prize.
Services Club president Stuart Brown acknowledged the event sponsors, the travelling teams, as well as the local teams, greenkeeper Paddy Phillips for preparation of the greens and surrounds, Pat Prendergast for assistance with the score board, the Lady Bowlers for catering duties and to the club’s secretary/manager Diane Slater and the staff for their efforts with the event.
In other bowls news at the Services Club last week, the Golden Oldies event on Wednesday had six players on the green.
