CSA takes first win in Twenty20 local cricket competition

Wednesday November 11, 2009

The first match in the new local Twenty20 night cricket competition was played on Friday evening with CSA taking on Empire at Ward Oval.

CSA captain Jade Buckman won the toss and decide to bat first.

After losing opener Murray Robotham for a ‘golden duck’, Jack McLeod, making a return to the cricket arena, joined Robbie Mitchell at the crease as they set about building a good total.

McLeod was eventually dismissed for a top score of 30 and Mitchell was out for 19.

Some late order hitting from Will Dobbs (28), Jay Egan (27), Cole Jermyn (16) and Rob Josephson (11 not out), enabled CSA to make a formidable total of 9/162 from their 20 overs.

McLeod and Josephson each hit a six while Chris Barnett failed to shine and was dismissed for a ‘golden duck’.

Wicket takers for the Empire side were Jason Milne with 2/12 from three overs, Mark Gilbert with 2/15 from three overs, John Hausia who claimed 2/12 from two overs, Craig Milne with 1/23 from three overs and Rob Fing with 1/31 from three overs.

Empire began their run chase in a similar fashion losing the early wicket of captain Damian Wray for a duck on the third ball of the innings.

They continued to lose wickets at regular intervals with only opener Fing (who was the top scorer in the match with 40) and Matt Crotty (with 11) being the only batsmen to reach double figures for the Empire side.

Empire was bowled out for 92 giving CSA victory by 70 runs.

Fing was the only Empire batsman to hit any sixes and he did in fine style launching three over the boundary.

Wicket takers for CSA were Robotham with 2/11 from three overs, Barnett (2/7 from two overs), Josephson (2/11 from one very long over), Buckman (1/5 from two overs) and McLeod (1/25 from three overs).

The Player of the Match was Will Dobbs and best fieldsman was young Taylor Gilbert.—contributed
