The Cobar Blues representative netball teams made the long journey to Barellan on Saturday to contest the fourth round of the Northern Riverina League competition.
The A Grade side returned with their 2010 season unbeaten record in tact while the B Grade side suffered a narrow loss.
A Grade had a comfortable 47-21 win in their match with shooters Zoë Harland and Lane Poland the stand-outs for the team.
Harland collected the Players’ Player award with Poland winning the Coach’s award.
Coach Amie Jacklin said she is very pleased with the progress of the A Grade side.
“They came out on Saturday ready to play,” she said.
“They were strong from the start keeping Barellan to just two goals in the first quarter and then went on to lead the whole match.
“But that’s not to say it wasn’t a tough game, as every ball was contested and Barellan never gave up.”
Coach Jacklin said the side is working very well together with lots of communication throughout the match.
The B Grade Blues began their match in direct contrast to the A Grade side and got off to a slow start with Barellan ahead 12-3 at the end of the first quarter.
“This aspect of the game is something we will be working on,” Coach Jacklin said.
Despite a great third quarter, where Cobar outpointed Barellan 10 goals to five, Barellan’s early lead, and a strong fourth quarter gave them a 39-24 win.
Coach Jacklin said a lack of match fitness also showed in the B Grade game and she had to trial a number of different player combinations throughout the match to compensate.
Sarah Irvine was named B Grade’s Players’ Player while Naomi Whitehurst collected the coach’s award.
Jacklin will also try out new player
combinations this weekend at home against Ungarie with key A and B Grade players advising they are unavailable to play or are out with injuries.
