Man wanted for evading local police

Wednesday May 12, 2010

A Bourke man is wanted on a string of charges after twice evading Cobar police and assaulting a local officer.
The charges result from two incidents on Friday near Cobar.
Senior Constable Adam Gibson said highway patrol police stopped a vehicle driven by the man north of Cobar on the Kidman Way at around 9am on Friday.
“The police officer observed the driver swap seats with his passenger.
“When the officer spoke to the initial driver he supplied false details,” Senior Constable Gibson said.
As the police officer attempted to confirm the driver’s details, the man exited the vehicle and ran off into bushland.
The other occupants of the vehicle identified the driver to police as a 29 year old Bourke man.
At 3.15pm on Friday the officer was continuing patrols along the Kidman Way and spotted the same vehicle that had been driven by the accused man earlier in the day.
The vehicle was stopped and the 29 year old was found hiding in the boot of the vehicle.
“As the officer attempted to place the man under arrest, he has kicked out at the officer and struck his left hand.
“He then moved back into the cabin of the vehicle and the officer again attempted to place him under arrest, but he has again kicked out, this time striking the officer’s right hand,” Senior Constable Gibson said.
The officer then used capsicum spray on the 29 year old however he again ran off into nearby bushland.
The man is now wanted by police on a number of charges including driving and assault charges.
