Louth, the town that Henry Lawson described as “a place that loved a drink, a party and a punt”, certainly lived up to its reputation for another year with the 2009 Louth Races held on Saturday. Louth Turf Club publicity officer Liz Murray reports that around 3,500 people passed through the gates for the races, with the newly enlarged licensed drinking area “well received”. While the races were the main event, the small community of Louth also hosted a number of other social events during the week including the Louth Public School Devonshire Tea and Art and Craft morning on Friday, the Gundabooka Golf Challenge which raised more than $3,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the Calcutta at Shindy’s Inn on Friday night where ‘Around the Bend at Louth’, a special
publication celebrating Louth Turf Club’s 50 years of racing, was launched.
