Mixed netball grand final winners: Guys and Gals—Brendan Rodda, Vanessa Kurta, Sarah Irvine, Tia Parisi, Stevi Bishop, Brittany Fugar and Todd Fugar at the youth centre last Wednesday night.

The Guys and Gals grabbed the mixed netball competition grand final honours at the youth centre last Wednesday night after they beat minor premiers, Space Cadets, 22-17.

After a nervous start by both teams, which saw a number of turn overs, it was almost two minutes before the first goal was scored in the game.

The first basket was sunk by Space Cadets’ Shooter Jaimee Cohen who also put the second point on the board soon after with a deadly accurate long range shot.

Cohen maintained her excellent shooting form all game which kept the Space Cadets in contention for the grand final title until the final stages of the match.

It took twice as long for the Guys and Gals to put their first points on the board (four minutes) with their first basket shot from right under the post by best and fairest contender Todd Fugar.

Fugar played a vital role in helping the Guys and Gals to a grand final win and scored a number of important goals as team mate and shooter Tia Parisi was heavily marked.

Space Cadets maintained the upper hand and led the first quarter 5-2.

Parisi opened the second stanza on a positive note scoring three rapid goals in two minutes to level the scores.

The match then went goal for goal for the remainder of the quarter with Fugar sinking the equaliser in the final seconds before half-time.

The game remained close in the third quarter with strong defence from both sides a feature of the match.

Space Cadets’ Goal Defence Lane Poland was instrumental in a number of turn overs for her side and coupled with the long reach of Goal Keeper Graham Harbison, they made it very hard for Guys and Gals’ Parisi and Fugar to post their points.

However it was very strong play from Guys and Gals Goal Defence Brendan Rodda that made all the difference in the second half of the match, a performance that also earned him the ‘Player of the Grand Final’ honour.

Rodda adjusted his defence technique, anticipating Cohen’s every move and thwarted a number of her attempts at goal.

Guys and Gals took control in the final quarter with continued strong defence from Rodda along with effective play in the centre court by Stevi Bishop at Centre and Brittany Fugar at Wing Attack.

Parisi and Fugar converted a number of long range goals and Guys and Gals held out to record a five goals win.
