Heroic display in junior league

Wednesday May 13, 2009

Cobar Junior Rugby League travelled to Apex Oval Dubbo fielding U/9, U/13 and U/15 teams on Saturday.

A vastly improved U/9 team played a fantastic free flowing game of footy, with dummy half Blake Reghenzani and pivot Padraic McElhone combining to give great service to their outside backs.

The Coughlan boys, Zeb and Tyler, ran well to make good yards on every occasion.

Fred Maclean and Chris Crotty worked tirelessly in attack and defence all game.

No score was kept for U/9 games, however Cobar’s Padraic McElhone crossed twice in the match.

Six players in the U/13s game will forever be remembered for their courage in taking the field against the might of Dubbo Eastridge.

Jay Ellison, Pat Hallcroft, Ethan Bereyne from the U/11s stepped up, and were joined by Jacob Good, Alex Madden and Jock Beazley.

Together these young heroes through their commitment and passion to the game and club, did Cobar proud.

This effort deserves the utmost respect from their fellow team mates.

This outstanding effort saved the club from a substantial fine for a competition forfeit.

The team lost their game, but that was irrelevant to the coaching staff and those on hand to watch.

A depleted U/15 side suffered their first loss of the season going down to PCYC in another torrid physical forward battle.

The Cobar forwards held their own with Khaleb Whitehurst’s inspirational game giving him another Man of the Match award.

Other forwards to shine were Jordan Cranch and Tom Sellick.

PCYC gained the upper hand with a more experienced backline after Cobar’s David Watson left the field injured early in the game.

With Cobar having no reserves and players playing out of position, PCYC pulled away and made good use of a constant stream of fresh men.

Cobar’s Jim Delboux, Wade Potter, Alec Burton and Brad Harris dished the punishment out in defence all game as they usually do, their tireless effort, however PCYC won 36-4.—Ron Law
