Four Cobar athletes were among the the Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) Open Netball and Golf squads who last week competed at the 2010 ClubsNSW Academy Games held in Armidale.
Bayley Prendergast (golf) and Rumah Prendergast, Courtney Hillier and Hayley Black (netball) were among more than 700 athletes from across the state’s 11 regional academies to compete in seven different sports – netball, tennis, bowls, golf, basketball, hockey and rugby union.
The FWAS netball squad played nine games over two and a half days of competition.
Despite not winning a match, Head Coach Debbie Clarke said she was thrilled with the performance of the FWAS squad.
“The girls played extremely well against their bigger and more experienced opponents.
“It was great to see that we gave some of the stronger academies a bit of a scare and really gave them a challenge,” Mrs Clarke said.
“The scores were not a true reflection of how well the girls played with many of the matches closer than the scoreboard suggests.
“The girls’ effort was terrific and they never gave up which is a great testament to the character of the squad.
“The opportunity for Far West athletes to play against some of the best players in NSW was a rewarding and eye opening experience,” Mrs Clarke said.
The girls will now go back to the training court to work on a few things in preparation for the NIB Games in July.
“Hopefully we can knock one or two of the other academies off next time,” Mrs Clarke said.

Bayley Prendergast said he had been looking forward to tackling the challenging Armidale course.
FWAS development officer Mathew Thompson said Bayley managed to improve his score each day of competition.
“The course was very tricky and challenging for the two Far West golfers, who aren’t used to playing on grass greens and hilly courses, but their effort and enthusiasm was excellent over the three days of competition,” Mr Thompson said. .
“It was a great opportunity for them to test their performance against some of the state’s best up and coming golfers.
