Cobar Cadet Brock Foster is flying to Germany this weekend as part of the Australian Army Cadets Exchange program.
Local Cadet Brock Foster has been selected to take part in a prestigious Australian Army Cadets Exchange program.
The 18 year old is one of six Australian cadets selected to spend two weeks in Germany as part of the program, which gives Australian Army Cadets the opportunity to participate in military, cultural and adventure activities in another country.
Brock, who is one of Cobar’s most senior Cadets, successfully completed the rigorous selection process, which he likened to the process of applying to join the Australian Army.
“It’s basically the peak achievement for Australian cadets,” he told The Cobar Weekly.
“You get to see another country, have some different experiences, and touch base with military operations over there,” Brock said.
Brock is the only cadet to be selected for the program from the 25th Battalion, which stretches from Tamworth to Bathurst/Cowra and out to Cobar.
As part of the program Brock will take part in a number of official ceremonies in Germany, as well as sporting activities, visits to war memorials, sightseeing, and spending time with German families.
He said he is expecting some gruelling sporting tasks.
“Last year they had a 40km, off road mountain bike tour, and canoeing 14km upstream,” Brock said.
“You are pretty much expected to be in the same physical condition as you would to get into the army,” Brock said.
He said the experience is likely to help him with his future goal of joining the army.
Brock is currently employed as an apprentice boilermaker with Cobar Shire Council, but said in the future he hopes to use his skills in the army.
Cobar Cadet Unit leader Colleen Boucher said Brock’s selection in the program is a major boost to the whole Cobar unit.
“The other cadets look up to Brock and can strive to achieve things like he has,” she said.
Earlier this year Brock was selected to participate in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo performance in Sydney.
Along with seven other cadets from around Australia, Brock greeted VIPs at the event including NSW Governor Marie Bashir
and Defence Force Chief ACM Angus
Houston.
