Roosters Reserves spoil Narromine Jets’ party

Wednesday July 14, 2010

Little A's
The visiting Narromine Jets found Roosters Reserve Grade captain Matt Manns a hard man to put down in a tackle. Manns had a high work rate in the hit ups for his Reserve Grade side’s 16-10 win on Sunday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

A hard fought and determined 16-10 win by the Reserve Grade Cobar Roosters over the Narromine Jets on
Sunday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval held off a whitewash win for the visitors.
Both the Narromine and Cobar clubs have been struggling this season and all six sides were desperate for wins in the Round 9 games hosted by Cobar on Sunday.
Cobar’s Under 18s were outclassed by Narromine 40-16 and the Cobar First Grade side were beaten by a similar margin, 46-12.
Cobar’s Reserve Grade side however turned the tables on the visitors to win their match
16-10 with Narromine scoring their last four points on the final siren.
The Reserve Grade game was close throughout and it wasn’t until well into the second half, after a run away try from Mark Knight and subsequent conversion by Ian Orcher, that the tiring Cobar team looked to have the upper hand.
With 15 minutes left to play, Cobar was forced to defend a number of Narromine attacking raids which were all foiled by the Roosters’ defence.
Block-busting runs from captain Matt Manns and an exciting 40 metre dash up the centre from Marc Cummins had the Roosters fans cheering and the ball back into safe territory.
With Cobar’s bench reserves doing almost as much running onto the field as the playing team was on the field, the Cobar defence held up until the final siren when a lapse in concentration saw Narromine’s Curtis Orcher slip through to score a consolation try for the Jets.
The First Grade game also started out on an even keel with Narromine first to score and the subsequent conversion gave them an early 6-0 lead.
Cobar retaliated soon after.
Following good lead up play on their line, Matt Knight faked a pass and easily slipped through the Jets’ defence to score near the posts.
Jay Egan’s conversion levelled the score at
6-all.
A costly mistake by Cobar saw Narromine cross for their second try and the conversion kicked the score along to 12-6 in Narromine’s favour.
A penalty against Cobar for a dangerous tackle soon had Narromine back attacking their line and it was only desperate defence from the Roosters that held them out.
However shortly after, five-eighth Luke Harding seemingly walked through to score under the posts and Cyrus Riley was successful with his third conversion attempt.
Narromine were looking certain to score again just before half time but a fumbled ball saved the Roosters on this occasion.
Chris Gilbert forced his way over for Cobar right on the half time siren.
Egan’s kick was successful and the score was 18-12 in favour of Narromine going into the sheds.
Narromine came out determined in the second half and ran in five more unanswered tries, four of which were converted by Riley who had a near perfect day with the boot.
The Cobar sides will travel to Bourke this Saturday to play the Dubbo Macquarie sides.
The Cobar Senior Rugby League committee is hoping for a good turn out of Cobar supporters at the games.
