The Cobar Blues A Grade netballers had a history-making win on Saturday at Ungarie in Round 12 of the Northern Riverina League competition.
It was Ungarie who beat Cobar in last year’s grand final and Cobar’s 54-50 win on Saturday was their first against Ungarie A Grade in four years of competition.
Cobar has now moved into third place on the competition ladder (and Ungarie back to fourth position) and this bodes well for Cobar in the run up to the semi finals in three weeks’ time.
Cobar hosts the competition tail enders Tullibigeal this Saturday and their final competition match is at home to the second placed Lake Cargelligo side.
The A Grade game between Cobar and Ungarie on Saturday started in a similar fashion to all their previous matches with Ungarie having a narrow lead in the first quarter and they extended it to nine goals at the half time break.
The Cobar side came out firing in the third quarter and reigned Ungarie’s lead back to just three goals.
Cobar steamed ahead in the final quarter and at one stage had a lead of seven goals before Ungarie fought back.
However they couldn’t match the Cobar side who claimed the four points win.
After playing their B Grade game, Naomi Whitehurst and Marybeth Baker stepped up to help out the A Grade side who were short of players for the match.
Nicola Harbison also stepped up from B Grade to fill the Goal Attack position and her efforts on Saturday earned her the Players’ Player award. Demi Smith (who moved from Wing Defence into Goal Keeper) also had an outstanding game and collected the Coach’s Award.
After making a promising start on Saturday, the Cobar B Grade side was beaten 33-25 by Ungarie.
Simone Howard, at Goal Attack, had a great game which earned her the Coach’s and Players’ Player awards for the week.
The B Grade side has slipped into sixth place on the competition ladder however they are not out of semi final contention yet.
A shock loss by Lake Cargelligo to Tullibigeal on Saturday leaves Cobar in with a chance however they need to win their next two home games against Tullibigeal and Lake Cargelligo by good margins.
All of which makes for an exciting run up to the semis
