Dry month sees more of state drought declared
Wednesday October 14, 2009
Cobar has been noted as one of the driest areas of the state in the past month as the NSW State Government releases new drought figures.
The latest figures show that 67.7 per cent of the state is drought declared, up from 65.9 per cent the previous month.
Minister for Primary Industries Ian
Macdonald said Cobar was one of many areas across the state with low rainfall recordings during September.
Cobar received just 17mm of rain last month, while our neighbours didn’t fare much better, with Tilpa recording just 4mm and Hillston also receiving 17mm.
“Parts of NSW have experienced dust storms, failed crops, bone dry paddocks and dwindling water supplies, so it’s a horror set of circumstances facing many country communities,” Mr Macdonald said.
The area of the state considered satisfactory has almost halved in the past month, dropping to just 4.9 per cent.
The majority of the Darling board area of the Livestock Health and Pest Authority (LHPA), which includes the Cobar region, is now drought declared.
An area in the northwest of the board was moved from satisfactory condition to
marginal condition this month.
