A disappointing forfeit by Dubbo PCYC in the Under 15 division of the Dubbo District Junior Rugby League competition took away some of the anticipated excitement from Saturday’s round of games at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.
The Narromine junior Jets however made the long trip west, recording decisive victories in the Under 9s and Under 13s but conceded the Under 11s match to Cobar’s, Rhys Power coached, young Roosters.
Cobar’s U/11s survived a close encounter with the visiting Jets to take match honours
26-18 after Ethan Bereyne, James Goonrey and Patrick Hallcroft dominated the opening minutes to send the Roosters out to an early 18-nil lead.
Quick-stepping five-eighth Jackson Hourn crossed twice while fullback Max Hillier also contributed a handy six points from a clever kick return.
However several turn-overs late in the first half presented Narromine with two soft replies and Cobar went to the break holding a narrow 18-12 lead.
A charging run by front-rower Bereyne and clever support from halfback Jay Ellison extended the lead to 22-12 before the Jets again scored out wide.
In an exciting finish, speedy centre Will Hinds sealed the win for Cobar when he outpaced the defence in a remarkable 80 metre sprint to the try line.
Competition favourites Narromine overwhelmed an under strength Cobar
U/13s combination who were forced to call on support from the U/11s team.
The one-sided match was little more than a training run for visitors Narromine with the freewheeling Jets leading 56-nil at halftime and wrapping up the competition points with a late avalanche of mostly runaway tries.
The final score was Narromine 100 to Cobar nil. In the U/9s (non competitive match) Cobar hosted Narromine.—contributed
