The decision six months ago by promising local young golfer, Matt Egan to move to Dubbo to gain experience playing on grass greens has paid off with the 18 year old winning the Macquarie Cup, Dubbo’s Easter golfing tournament.
Egan won the two day competition in thrilling style, coming from behind to win by four shots.
He finished –5, at the front of a field of approximately 200 golfers from across New South Wales.
At the end of the first day of play Egan was eight shots behind the leaders.
“I didn’t think I had a chance so I just went out and played on Sunday,” Egan told The Cobar Weekly yesterday.
“It was about the 13th hole when I was equal with the leaders that I thought I was in with a chance.
“That’s when I got a bit nervous,” he said.
However the nerves did not interfere with his game and, at five behind with five holes to play, Egan produced some brilliant strokes to produce a round of 63 which won him the tournament.
Egan had a stellar year last year with the Cobar Golf Club winning the NSW Open and Junior Sandgreen titles, the 4Ball Sandgreen title (with golf partner Phil Gilligan) and the Cobar Open.
He was back playing on the Cobar course this week getting in some sandgreen practice for when he defends his NSW Sandgreen
4-Ball-Best-Ball Championship title this weekend at Bourke.
