The Cobar Buckwaroon Catchment Landcare Group were named joint winners with Armidale’s Southern New England Landcare group of the NSW Landcare Community Group award last Thursday in Port Macquarie.
Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Carmel Tebbutt, joined more than 300 ‘Landcarers’ from across NSW at the awards last week to celebrate 20 years of Landcare.
“The Landcare Awards are a great chance for the NSW Landcare community to acknowledge and reward the volunteers and the community effort that goes into protecting our precious environment,” Ms Tebbutt said.
“For every winner, there are hundreds of others in Landcare making an incredible difference locally by repairing our environment and solving some of the nation’s land, water and coastal degradation issues.
“It’s always valuable for the individuals and groups that make up NSW Landcare, to come together and see first hand what their peers have achieved.
“It is inspiring to see what can be accomplished with hard work and determination.”
“Over the past 20 years the Landcare movement has forged a new direction in community based land management and practical environmentalism, one which has seen farmers, local residents and businesses join together to protect and improve our unique landscapes.
Ms Tebbutt said the calibre of this year’s Landcare Award nominations was outstanding and a sign of the valuable work going on in local communities across NSW to care for our environment.
