Wool Track plan on show to MP
Wednesday September 16, 2009
The Wool Track project, aiming to completely seal the Ivanhoe Road, has been formally presented to federal government representative Maxine McKew.
A delegation including Cobar mayor Lilliane Brady and council’s general manager Ray Smith met with Ms McKew, the Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government last Thursday.
Central Darling and Balranald shire councils were also part of the delegation, hoping to secure funding to sealing the road.
Mr Smith said the main positive to come from the meeting was personally presenting the project to Ms McKew.
“We didn’t get any promises or guarantees, but we did get an undertaking that they would look at the project. At least now she’s seen our faces and she knows the project.”
The delegation presented the results of an economic feasibility study which showed the road has the potential to be a “very important” route for both freight and tourist traffic.
The estimated cost to seal the 240km of road is currently estimated at around $38million.
Ms McKew has also suggested to the delegation that they formally write to her and request the road be reclassified into a ‘Road of National Significance’.
