Parents outplay the Kangas to win series

A team of 24 ‘keen as mustard’ Kanga cricketers turned up on Friday afternoon at Ward Oval ready to knock the Parents off the winning mantle in the Parents versus Players series.

Travis Buckman (Captain of Parents) won the toss and, after inspecting the pitch, sent the Kangas in to bat.

The Kangas amassed a total of 191 runs with 39 out off 24 overs.

The Parents, bowling with the new ball, made it very hard for the Kangas to get any runs.

Buckman and Stuart Jeffery both ended up with hat tricks and Craig Dillon bowled the best ever seen against 10 year olds.

Allan ‘Afghan’ Fazulla was dynamic behind the stumps.

Even with the ball in his hands, the Kangas were thinking about running a single.

Half way through the innings ‘Afghan’ requested fellow Parent team member Julie McClure to stop throwing the ball in to the stumps so hard as it was hurting his hands.

Runs for the Kangas were scored by: Fred McClure and Thomas Jones (25), Raymond Jones and Adam Buckman (20), Matt Dillon and Alex Kennedy (19) (and Matt did get out for a ‘duck’), James Goonrey and Jay Ellison (18), Blake Toomey and Bryan Mitchell (18), Keyb O’Boyle and Braith Good (18), Will Bennett and Sophie McClure (18).

The Parents batted second after a delicious barbecue cooked by the grandfather of cricket Lloyd Mitchell.

Tony Ellison and Brett Hallcroft opened the batting with a solid 21; Sam Thornley and ‘Afghan’ added 29 runs even after ‘Afghan’ had done his hamstring running his second single, well the way he was running it looked like he had.

Buckman and Jeffery put on 31 runs with plenty of catching practice in the outfield. Scott ‘Socket’ Toomey and Charmaine Arnold knocked up 23 runs, (Charmaine had to bat for Robbie Good as he was too afraid to face Robbie Junior and Braith Good’s bowling) and Charmaine scored 17 of those runs.

Hollie McClure and Todd Peters scored 18, and Codi Ellison and Jemma Dillon scored 17.

Craig Dillon was also seen to run four runs off his partner’s bat (never before seen in Cobar Cricket off his own bat, let alone his partner’s).

In the end the Parents scored 208 runs with 39 out off 24 overs.

A great night was had by all the kids and parents who turned up to enjoy the night.  Better luck next year kids!—contributed
