Low scores and early finishes in local cricket competition

Wednesday December 16, 2009

Low scores and early finishes were the order of the day for last Saturday’s round of senior cricket matches.

RSL took on Atlas Copco/Golfy2 on the turf wicket at Ward Oval with RSL making their first defence of the Bert Oldfield Challenge Cup which they took off Nymagee in their last match.

After winning the toss, RSL captain Glenn Spinks made the kind gesture of sending in a very depleted Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 team which could only put nine players on the paddock.

They were missing key top order and in-form batsmen Jake Harbison, Bill Behsman and Damien Harbison and this showed as the revised top order capitulated to be five wickets down for only 12 runs.

That was until the partnership of 39 between Ray Ebsworth (who top scored with 21) and Bryan Manns (17) helped to resurrect their position.

However, when this pair was dismissed, the tail soon followed suit and Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 was all out for 60.

Shane Munro had the best bowling figures for RSL with 3/11, however he was well supported by Wade Potter (2/11), Glenn Spinks (2/11) and Geoff Potter (1/13).

RSL made short work of chasing down the total losing three wickets for 61 and taking only 9.3 overs to cruise to victory.

Peter Neale top scored with 30 and Clay Neale made 20.

Wicket takers for Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 were Justin Richardson 2/19 and Robbie Mitchell 1/2.

In the other senior match played on the synthetic wicket at No 2 Oval, Ox Colts were up against Golf Club who were also short on player numbers and could only field a side of 10.

Ox Colts’ captain Stewart Fraser, in a reversal of the team’s usual trend of batting first when they win the toss, decided to send Golf Club in to bat first.

After losing their captain Damian Wray for a duck on the second ball of the match, Golf Club continued to lose regular wickets and was dismissed for a total of 72.

John Hausia (who top scored with 21) and Rohan Lloyd (with 15) were the only batsmen to make double figures.

After his fourth successive score of zero for the season, Wray must now be odds-on favourite to win the famous, and definitely not coveted, ‘Daddles the Duck’ end of season trophy.

All bowlers contributed for Ox Colts with Craig Tanke taking 3/22, Mark Fraser 2/15, Stewart Fraser 2/17 and David Watson 1/15.

Ox Colts lost only two wickets in reaching their target finishing at 2/73 from only 13 overs.

Slade Neale (19) and David Watson (13) were the batsmen dismissed with Greg
Brown (24) and Luke Hillier (6) remaining not out.

The only wicket taker for Golf Club was young Taylor Gilbert who opened the bowling and finished with 2/25.

Gilbert is also claiming Neale as her ‘bunny batsman’ having now dismissed him on three occasions this season.

At the end of the second round of matches the competition table has Nymagee leading on 52 points followed by Atlas Copco/Golfy 2 on 44, RSL 40, Ox Colts 36 and Golf Club 28.

This Saturday’s games will be the final matches for 2009 before the Christmas break.—contributed
