A man has been charged with firearms offences and is expected to be extradited to Victoria on further charges after he was apprehended last week after a dramatic chase near Cobar.
Police were first alerted to the male after he attempted to pay for fuel at a local service station with a stolen credit card.
He left the scene and failed to return to pay for the fuel.
Police were given a description of the man and vehicle, and he was identified as a person of interest.
Senior Constable Adam Gibson said police began to circulate the Cobar town as well as north along the Kidman Way.
“At approximately 4.15pm Highway Patrol police located the vehicle 35km north of Cobar where it was bogged,” he said.
The male driver was sighted next to the vehicle receiving assistance from a passing driver, but fled into bushland when he saw police.
“It was alleged that the vehicle had two firearms in it so police searched the vehicle but did not locate any firearms.
“A short time later police from Cobar and Bourke established a perimeter and the road was blocked to north and south bound traffic.
“The male was sighted a number of times, during a pursuit through bushland and was eventually apprehended and arrested.
“He directed police further into bushland where he had hidden two firearms.”
The firearms were secured and the man was conveyed to Bourke Police Station where he was charged with 11 offences.
