Members of the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club travelled to Forbes on the weekend for the Western Districts carnival and while a couple of game Yabbies took part in an unofficial swim, the carnival was called off due to heavy rain.
In the Yabbies competition at home last week, it was the ‘old salts’ of the club who cleaned up with senior members Paul Swainston, Murray Harland and Bill Fugar winning the main events.
Swainston won the 30 metres event with a time of 0.13 seconds off his nominated time from veteran swimmer Tom McIver (0.16).
Colin ‘Butch’ Eves, with 0.22 seconds, was in third place.
Harland narrowly pipped Fugar for first place honours in the 50 metres event.
Harland finished 0.15 seconds outside his nominated time with Fugar returning a time of 0.17. ‘Junior member’ Sean Pennell was in third place with 0.18 seconds.
Fugar turned the tables on Harland in the 100 metres event winning with a time of 0.65 seconds off his nominated time.
Harland (with 1.30) finished in second place with club veteran Bob Clark in third place on 1.85 seconds.
McIver teamed up with Chris Powell to win the brace relay with a time of 2.51 seconds off their nominated time.
Swainston and the old man of the sea, Harley Toomey, were in second place (3.09) and Eves and Pennell claimed third place with 3.26 seconds off their time.—contributed
