Blues take on top of the table Tigers

Wednesday June 17, 2009

The Cobar Blues AFL side ventured to Lake Cargelligo to take on the top of the ladder Tigers on Saturday in Round 8 of the Northern Riverina League competition and, after leading early in the match, the Blues were eventually beaten by the Tigers 22-23-155 to 12-8-80.

It wasn’t the best start for the Blues with the home side slotting two early goals until the Blues’ gun forward Robbie Mitchell kicked two goals of his own to steady the ship.

Great ball movement from the midfield allowed team mates Craig Curry and Luke Sheehan to cash in for a goal each to put the Cobar side up by 17 points at the first break and surprise the competition leaders.

However their lead was not to last and Lake Cargelligo opened the second quarter with renewed vigour after copping a barrage from their coach.

The Cobar backline was put under severe pressure and, without the services this week of Cobar’s ‘Enforcer’ Wade McLachlan, Clay Neale and Sean Irvine were busy keeping the score line respectable.

The third quarter was won by Cobar with Greg Brown stepping up around the half forward area allowing for increased ball penetration into Cobar’s forward line.

This gave better opportunities for stalwart Terry Pitkin and Chris Higgins to put some points on the board.

Cobar needed a big last quarter and they gave it their all, however they were significantly beaten with the final score of 22-23-155 to 12-8-80 in Lake’s favour.

Rohan Lloyd was again a stand-out player for the Blues and promises to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

Corey Slater continues to demonstrate great presence around the ball and Karl Powell’s efforts were also relentless.

One main aspect the Cobar team needs to work on is the overuse of the handball that has burdened the side this year.

Captain/coach Murray Robotham said overall the Cobar side had played well and are now playing good football.

Cobar’s best players were: Daniel Howard, Slater, Robotham, Lloyd, Mitchell and Brown.

The goal kickers were: Curry 2, Luke Sheehan 2, Mitchell 2, Pitkin, Higgins, Brown, Travis Dunlevy, Howard, Paul Gauci and Robotham.
