Historic value of mine power plant engines examined
Wednesday June 17, 2010
The historic value and future display uses of five diesel engines used in CSA Mine’s old Power Station is being investigated by Cobar Shire Council.
Cobar Management Pty Ltd is currently updating its long term Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Plan, which has been developed under state government legislation to detail the actions to be taken if the mine was to close.
While the plan does not put a date on the mine’s closure, it helps the mine to put long term plans in place.
Under the plan, the diesel engines were identified as being surplus to the mine’s current needs.
Following consultation with a number of different bodies, it was also determined that the engines have the potential to be of some historical significance.
Cobar Shire Council last week discussed its part in the future of the engines at the council finance and policy committee meeting.
A recommendation was made to conduct a feasibility study into the future use of the engines by Cobar Shire Council, including possible costs for relocation and uses for the engines.
Three main options have already been put forward to council regarding the engines, with council to further investigate the most appropriate course of action.
Among the options is preserving the engines and building which houses them as a future museum; removal of the engines and donating them to Great Cobar Heritage Centre for
display; or photographing the engines and plant room and archiving the information before removal and sale of the items to
private buyers.
