Extensive rain falls across the district the best this year

Wednesday February 18, 2009

Roads closed after extensive rainfall
Good rainfall was recorded across the western region over the weekend, with 200mm measured at Bourke causing the Kidman Way north of Cobar to be closed.

The western area of NSW is waterlogged after steady rain fell across the region last week, with Cobar receiving 66mm in one week and Bourke experiencing flood conditions after more than 200mm of rain fell over the weekend.

The rain set in last Friday with 26mm recorded at the Cobar Meteorological Office, while it continued on and off over the weekend taking the weekly total at 9am Sunday to 36mm.

A further 32.6mm fell throughout the day and night on Monday.

The rain caused the cancellation of a number of cricket matches, while the Cobar Golf Course was closed.

The wet weather has also impacted on upgrade works in Marshall Street, causing the closure of Linsley Street for an extra week after drainage repair works were delayed.

Bourke’s heavy downpour caused the Kidman Way north of Cobar to be closed to all traffic, with a further 30mm of rain falling in the town on Monday hampering the clean up effort.

Many places across the district had similar rainfall figures to Cobar, with Louth measuring 49mm, Brewarrina receiving 46mm, and Wilcannia measuring 30mm.

It was a dramatic turnaround in weather conditions in Cobar last week with wintry temperatures to accompany the rainfall.

After an almost record breaking stretch of temperatures above 40 degrees the previous week, last week started off with a slightly milder 36.6 degrees.

However for the rest of the week the temperature failed to climb above 30 degrees, with a very cool top of just 19.1 degrees measured on Saturday.

The forecast for this week is for warmer conditions and the rain to clear.

Today is expected to be mostly fine with temperatures ranging from 16 to 28 degrees.

Tomorrow is again expected to be fine and mostly sunny, with the temperature expected to reach 31 degrees.

Similar conditions are expected Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures forecast to reach around 31 degrees.
