A new sporting club is up and running

A new sporting club is now up and running for Cobar residents and participants will soon be looking at the possibility of setting up an affiliated club for Triathlon in Cobar.

Interested parties have sought and received insurances through Triathlon NSW for a three race program for a “sprint” distance Triathlon run from the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

This is a course which involves a 500 metre swim, 20km bike ride and 4km run.

It was proposed to run three trial Triathlons in Cobar to introduce the sport and gauge interest.

The first was held on Sunday with the second event of the Try-a-Triathlon series to be run on Sunday March 15 and the third on Sunday April 5.

Club founder Dennis Wilson said the setting up the club was made possible with help from pool manager Peter Shanahan, Cobar Shire Council and the local police.

“It is hoped that enough interest is generated to continue the Cobar Triathlon Club into the winter.

This will involve a triathlon once per month in the pool season and a duathlon (run-ride-run) once per month in winter.

“Triathlon is an interesting sport as competitors combine three different individual sports.

“It can also be run as a group event where three competitors complete one leg each.

“It is a sport of growing popularity and was recently accepted into the Olympics.

"Participants of all ages can compete,” Mr Wilson said.

Anyone interested in competing or assisting with the formation of the club, volunteering to be a time-keeper or marshal, is encouraged to contact Mr Wilson.

In Sunday’s event, Wilson took out line honours with a time of just under an hour.

Wade Potter finished his first triathlon in a fantastic time of 1:05:30.

Eleven year old Emily Claxton did outstandingly well to finish the course in the 1.51.00.

Many competitors shaved minutes off their previous personal best (PB) times, with Kevin McArdle taking a huge 20 minutes off his previous PB.
