Nineteen people gathered at Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool for the second last triathlon of the season on Sunday.

Greg Brown finished first in the field while Tess Lloyd was the first of the ladies to finish she also posted her first ever win.

The athletes were greeted with a cold southerly headwind but otherwise favourable conditions.

There were quite a few first timers and an experienced older athlete in the form of Ian Settree on hand to provide support and advice.

The event started with a swim around the pool which was designed to mimic an open water swim and test the stronger swimmers.

Dylan Prince and Wade Potter exited the 500m swim first with a time of 8 minutes 05 seconds, just ahead of David Vink 8:42 in third place.

The first woman to exit the water was Tess Lloyd with 11:02 just ahead of Raina Ewing with a time of 13:43.

There was a dramatic change in the race lead during the 20km ride.

The young leaders were caught within two kilometres by Dennis Wilson and Greg Brown.

At the end of the ride, despite a few attempts to break away from Brown, Wilson conceded two seconds who finished the bike with a time of 35:38.

Vink was next into transition, but he had not shaken Prince who managed to enter transition at the same time.

Lloyd managed to extend her lead in the ladies competition and entered transition after a bike time of 48:58.

The 4km run was little contest for Brown, who relaxed into stride, then accelerated to complete the course in 1hr 49s.

Next home was a deflated Wilson (1:01:43) followed by a fast finishing Prince (1:05:49).

Tess Lloyd finished strongly in her first triathlon and was happy with her time of 1:25:49.

“The highlight for me is seeing how many first timers stepped up and gave this a go,” said Mr Brown after the event.—contributed
