Extra police and RTA staff were in Cobar over the weekend conducting Operation Road Ranger 7, targeting drug, heavy vehicle and traffic offences.
The operation was mainly centred around the truck stop on Wilcannia Road on the outskirts of town, where vehicles were inspected and some searched, although traffic stops were carried out throughout the whole township area.
Senior Constable Brett Pitkin said the police drug detection dog was also in town for the operation.
Eight arrests were made as a result of the operation including six for drug offences and two for drink driving offences.
“One heavy vehicle was defected and put off the road after major defects were detected with its tyres, and one heavy vehicle was found to have minor defects,” Senior Constable Pitkin said.
Officers also issued six infringement notices for heavy vehicle log book offences.
Police were generally pleased with the results of the operation, with only two drink driving offences detected from 640 random breath tests conducted.
