Euabalong fights for water supply

Wednesday November 18, 2009

Euabalong and Euabalong West residents are questioning a state government decision which has left the villages without water.

A meeting was held in Euabalong last Wednesday to discuss the water situation, with the state government ordering that water releases from the Wyangala Dam be cut.

However residents expressed anger at the decision to allow enough water to be released to keep Condobolin weir full, however no water will be allowed to run over the weir, effectively cutting off Euabalong’s water supply.

Cobar Mayor Lilliane Brady, who attended last week’s meeting, said residents are “irate”.

“Why should these people have to cart water in buckets just because they are further down the river?” Cr Brady said at last week’s council works committee meeting.

She said she is trying to secure a meeting with Minister for Local Government Barbara Perry and Minister for Water Phillip Costa.

“I want to ask Minister Costa why they can’t build a weir near Euabalong,” Cr Brady said.

Cobar Shire Council is currently investigating possible sites for bore sinking to add to the villages’ water supplies.

Water will be carted to both Euabalong and Euabalong West from Lake Cargelligo until a further supply for the villages is secured.
