Twenty20 heroes

Wednesday November 18, 2009

In the local Twenty20 cricket match played on Friday night at Ward Oval, two of the favoured teams to win the competition, the Golf Club Heroes and the Occidental Bushies met, with the Golf Club Heroes the victors with a 56 run win.

The Golf Club Heroes, captained by Doug North, won the toss and batted first.

Wickets fell at regular intervals with only North (who was dismissed by a good catch from Matt Nicholson for 19) and Paul Gauci looked like making a score of note.

With the score at 8/71, Gauci was joined at the crease by Don Heather and they put on a partnership of 59 before Gauci was dismissed for a well compiled 73.

Heather remained not out on 10 as the Golf Club Heroes were dismissed for 135 on the second last ball of the innings.

Gauci was the only batsman to record any sixes, smashing five over the fence.

Wicket takers for the Occidental Bushies were Mark Fraser (3/31 including three wickets in his first over), Mal Hillier (2/9), Phil Harley (1/14), Craig Tanke (1/25), Matt Nicholson (1/11) and Stephen Nicholson (1/5).

The Occidental Bushies began their innings facing some very tight line and length bowling and despite their strong batting line-up were held to a low score of 7/79 from their 20 overs.

Stephen Nicholson top scored with 16 not out with other batsmen making double figures being openers Dan Howard (15) and Matt Nicholson (12).

Leading Cobar batsmen Phil Harley (2) and Stewart Fraser (3) were dismissed for low scores.

Howard was the only batsman to hit a six.

Geoff Potter (3/23) was the leading wicket taker and was well supported by Justin Richardson (1/11), Baden Smith (1/13), Wade Potter (0/6), David Watson (0/8), Cameron Dunlevy (0/9) and Todd Fugar (2/3).

The Eagle Boys Pizza Man of the Match was Gauci with Mark Fraser the best fieldsman for the Occidental Bushies and Baden Smith was the best fieldsman for the Golf Club Heroes side.—contributed
