A 23 year old local man could be facing prison time when he was charged under the new ‘Skye’s Law’ after he led police on a chase through a number of local streets on Friday night.
He was also charged with driving with a mid range prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving in a dangerous manner.
The new law ensures strong penalties for anyone who leads police on a high speed pursuit, with a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
The man was first spotted by police at around 11.20pm on Friday driving in Mopone Street with no headlights on.
Senior Constable Leanne Eather said police attempted to pull the man over, however he drove away at speed.
The man led police on a chase along Sunset Drive, the Barrier Highway, Bathurst Street, Mopone Street, Woodiwiss Avenue and out the Lerida Road.
The man eventually pulled over approximately 3.5km out the Lerida Road and was subjected to a random breath test, which returned a positive reading.
He was found to have a mid-range blood alcohol concentration.
The man’s licence was suspended on the spot and he is expected to appear in court in the coming months.
