It’s been a successful week for both the senior and junior rugby league clubs with senior and junior sides recording competition wins along with a combined fundraising night that raised just over $3,000.
NRL legends Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach and Noel ‘Crusher’ Cleal were guest speakers at a Sportsman’s Night last Wednesday at the Golfie.
The night included an auction of sporting memorabilia with money raised going to both the senior and junior clubs.
On the field the Cobar First Grade side put in a good away performance on Sunday to beat the Narromine Jets 30-22 in Round 2 of the Tooheys Group 11 competition.
Front Rower Damien Frize led out the new look First Grade Roosters outfit and, right from the opening whistle, Cobar showed they had no intention of going home without a win.
With Frize combining with Ray Ebsworth for some brilliant second phase play, the Roosters quickly gained the momentum to allow Chris Barnett, Eddie Orcher and Shannon Boney to put points on the board.
However Narromine never gave up and, in the dying minutes of the game, the Jets were within one try of winning.
A late intercept saw Mathew Garland run 50 meters to score under the posts for the Roosters and a penalty in the following set sealed the win for Cobar.
Chris Gilbert was voted Players’ Player with Matt Knight a standout performer in attack.
An enthusiastic Bourke/Cobar Reserve Grade team came up against a much larger side in Narromine, however what they lacked in size they made up for in enthusiasm.
And while the final score was 32-8 in the Jets favour, Coach Jarrod Marsden said a lot of positives came out of the game.
He believes as the season progresses and players have more game time together they will be a competitive force in Group 11.
In direct contrast to last week’s performance, the Roosters Under 18s put in a lack-lustre performance against Narromine on Sunday and were soundly beaten 40-0.—contributed
