Council considers solution to caravan park crowding

Wednesday August 19, 2009

Tourists visit Cobar
Port Macquarie’s Dianne and Lyall Smith visited the Great Cobar Heritage Centre last week, and spoke with The Cobar Weekly about their travels including a stay at the Cobar Caravan Park.

Tourists visiting Cobar are backing local tourism manager John Martin’s calls for an urgent expansion of caravan park facilities in Cobar.

The Cobar Weekly spoke with Cobar Caravan Park guests Dianne and Lyall Smith last week, who said they were lucky to secure a spot at the park.

“It was completely full, we got the last powered site yesterday afternoon,” Mr Smith said.

“It is a fantastic park, we were impressed with the hot showers,” Mrs Smith said.

Mr and Mrs Smith are currently travelling around parts of Australia with their caravan, and said Cobar was an ideal place for travellers to stop.

“It’s a long way from Broken Hill to Dubbo so this was a good place to stop,” Mrs Smith said.

“It’s a fair hike, enough to drive for one day.”

Cobar’s caravan park facilities were also a topic of discussion at last week’s Cobar
Shire Council community facilities committee meeting, after a suggestion from Mr Martin that the Cobar Caravan Park requires an immediate expansion.

Councillors also discussed whether a second caravan park is required for the town.

“I think we should look at ground opposite the current caravan park, maybe west of Sunset Drive,” Cr Peter Yench said.

“Maybe we could section off some of that land and make a caravan park site, then advertise for someone to come along and develop it,” he said.

“The one we already have is excellently run, but to make it bigger is a big ask on the managers,” Cr Yench said.

Council’s director of planning and environmental services Garry Ryman said council would need to look at a range of factors if it was to consider expanding the current caravan park.

“It’s not only having the money to do it, it’s also fitting it into the lease.

You need to look at whether how much we spend is balanced and is commercially viable,” Mr Ryman said.

Councillors resolved to accept the tourism report, but made no decisions about any
future expansion plans for Cobar Caravan Park.
