Plans underway for new council owned surgery

Cobar Shire Council is moving ahead with plans to create another council-owned medical facility.
A report on the matter was considered at last week’s finance and policy meeting, with a report on the cost to convert an existing council-owned residence into a doctor’s surgery.
Council resolved to call for quotes to renovate the building, but the final decision to go ahead with the works depends on a number of factors, including a commitment from Dr Indra Karalasingham to lease the building for three years following the refurbishment.
Council has also called for a further report into funding options for the project.
According to a report on the building from council’s director of planning and environmental services Garry Ryman, the conversion requires development consent as a change of land use and building classification is required.
He said the design concept has been developed and preliminary cost estimates indicate the project would cost around $95,000.
“The design addresses building compliance and safety matters as relevant to a public building,” Mr Ryman reported.
