This year marks the 125th anniversary of Catholic education in Cobar and to commemorate this special event St John’s School is inviting former students, teachers and families to become a permanent part of the school’s history.

St John’s School principal Deb Fryer said to celebrate the significant milestone in the school’s history they were going to build a ‘sacred place’.

“We are inviting people to become a permanent part of our history by having their name engraved on a paver which will then be used to create this ‘space’,” Mrs Fryer said.

The proposed area adjacent to the church is to be used by students and parishioners.

“It’s quite a large area so we are hoping we will sell enough pavers to do the whole area.”

The Catholic school in Cobar was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1884 and the initial enrolment of 95 students grew to 225 by 1990.

The current enrolment of St John’s is 205 pupils across nine classes, including one small
composite Year 3-4 class and two Year 5 classes.

Originally known as Saint Xaviers Convent School, the Sisters of Mercy ran the school until 1999, when the Josephite nuns took over.

The school, which is part of the Wilcannia-Forbes Diocese, is adjacent to the historic Saint Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church and the Mercy Convent.
