Cobar Management Pty Ltd’s efforts in helping to establish the Cobar Community Health Care Centre have won the mine the NSW Minerals Council’s Community Excellence Award.
The project beat five other finalists, including Peak Gold Mines’ unique model of enterprise facilitation, designed to make Cobar economically and socially sustainable in the long term.
The annual excellence awards are a way in which the mining industry recognises its major achievers and innovators in the fields of environmental management and community engagement.
Representatives from both CSA Mine and Peak Gold Mine attended the awards ceremony on Monday night which was part of a two day conference.
According to the minerals council, the CSA project was chosen as a winner because of the links established with the community.
“The mine has helped establish a medical facility which is sustainable in the long term, rather than take the traditional approach of providing in-house medical services which would only be available for the duration of the business and would not be accessible to the entire community.”
The conference brought together more than 270 mining industry representatives and some of Australia’s leading industry, environment, community and communications professionals.
Speakers included Todd Sampson, founder of Earth Hour, ABC science journalist Robyn Williams, John Connor the Chief Executive Officer of the Climate Institute, Warren Mundine, Executive, Australian Employment Covenant and Lauren Burns, Olympics 2000 Taekwondo gold medallist.
Dr Nikki Williams, CEO NSW Minerals Council said the mining industry takes very seriously its social and environmental obligations to the communities in which companies and their employees live and work.
“Over the past 10 years the industry has undergone an historic transformation, as companies increasingly embrace environmental and social outcomes as crucial measures of success,” Dr Williams said.
The title of this year’s conference was Game Plan 21 – Tactics for the Times with topics for discussion including water management, climate change, and mine site rehabilitation.
