Horse racing made a successful return to Cobar on the weekend after a two year absence, with more than 1,000 people passing through the gates at Dalton Park Race Course on Saturday.

The feature race, The WesTrac Cobar Branch Cobar Cup, was taken out by Grimm, trained by Tullibigeal’s John Tyack, lengths ahead of Faux Pas in second and Rockingham in third place.

A strong field lined up for the Peak Gold-sponsored Golden Mile Foot Race, with 15 competitors tackling the 1.6km track.

Cobar’s Greg Brown took out the $500 first prize, well ahead of Chris O’Hara in second place.

The first horse race on the day, the Broughton Field Services George Booth Memorial Cup, attracted a full field, with Let’s Bat trained by Nyngan’s Rodney Robb coming in first ahead of Miss Diddles and Youkay Teevee.

Coonabarabran trainer Gary Bignell took out the Bruce Coath Memorial Award for Most Successful Trainer, with his horse Glitter Gun winning the Sullivans Mining and Hardware Vincent Delaney Memorial race.

Other race winners were Fortune Express (Landmark Russell Hay Family Memorial Maiden Plate), trained by Graham Grimmond from Condobolin; and Anadite (KML Industries Buckman Family Memorial) from Wellington trainer Karen McCarroll.

Off the track, the Honest Don’s Copper City Tyres Fashions in the Field competition was hotly contested, with Suzanne Prince named Most Elegant Lady; Scott Robinson Best Dressed Gent and Jemma Mackenzie Most Fashionable Filly.

Margaret Potter was judged to have the Most Outstanding Headwear, while in the junior section, Damon Bruce and Niamph Urquart were the winners.

Runners-up were Daniel Irvine, Chris O’Hara, Shelly Newman, Lillian Simpson, Karen Viant, Molly Barraclough and Toby Smith.

Cobar Miners’ Race Club secretary Tess Lloyd said the committee was thrilled with the success of the day, and has already locked in a date for racing next year.
