Mixed indoor soccer kicks off

Wednesday May 20, 2009

The mixed indoor soccer competition kicked off last Wednesday night with the title contenders all recording comfortable victories.

Last season’s grand finalists Floorboards, started the night off by defeating Big Yellow Elephants (BYE) 16–1.

Floorboards spent the off-season adding depth to their female player roster.

It paid off in their first match with six (6) goals being scored by females.

Bonnie Buckman (2), Mel Mills (2), Cheryl Peatey and Ellie Russell all scored goals.

Jade Buckman, Josh Lalund and Roger Munoz scored one goal each.

BYE’s new addition, Daniel Howard, scored their only goal.

Best and fairest match points went to Clayton Martin and Mel Mills.

The second game of the night featured Peak-CSA versus No Fear Here.

Anything less than the championship would seem a failure for Peak-CSA.

They have spent the entire off-season training, preparing and waiting for the competition to start.

They came up against a new team for 2009, No Fear Here.

Most of their players have never kicked the felt ball before.

No Fear Here held their own in the first half only trailing 3–4 at the break.

Peak-CSA came out in the second half with more purpose after the shake-up they got in the first half.

They ran out 11–5 winners.

Naidu Nagaiya top scored for Peak-CSA with seven goals, Greg Brown (2) and Ashneel Kumar (1) as well as one own goal.

No Fear Here goals were scored by Bill Douglas (2), Jim Tara (2) and Travis Buckman (1).

The best and fairest match points went to Tara and Sue Jones.

The defending champions Redbacks secured an easy 13-nil win over Sandvik Sonics after a slow start.

Leading 4–0 at the half-time break, Redbacks went on a rampage in the second half thanks to five goals from Wade Smith.

Smith ended the match with six goals, while Baden Smith, Eden Fairbank, Hannah Young, Jimmy Martin and Robbie Mitchell all scored one goal each.

Match best and fairest points went to Baden Smith and Young.—Becks
