Time to celebrate all things Aussie

Wednesday January 21, 2009

Gearing up for Australia Day
January 26 is a double celebration for Madeleine Retallick, Chelsea Gibson and Bonnie Bushby, when they not only celebrate
Chelsea’s 14th birthday, but also bring out the lamingtons and green and gold for Australia Day.

Dust off your cork hat, throw another shrimp on the barbie and don’t forget to head down to the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool next Monday and get involved in the local Australia Day celebrations.

With a program covering all things Australian from a triathlon to a lamington bake-off, Cobar residents can come together to celebrate what it means to be Australian.

The day will also feature the presentation of the annual Australia Day awards by ambassador Glenn Sargeant.

Categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sports Person of the Year, Services to Sport Award, Community Event of the Year, the Bossie Mitchell Award for Service to the Community, and the Kerrigundi Award for young persons who excelled in representative sport.

Award nominees, announced Monday, are: Cobar Rugby Union Club, Ron Cabot, John de Bruin, Anita Hodgkinson, Laurel Roberts, Pastor Ian Charles, Marge Dowling, Matt Egan, Allan Fazulla, Relay for Life Committee, Daniel Stephens, Max Humphries, Christine Brown, Peter Ford, Ted Brown, Angela Webb, Pete Rogers, Narelle Retallick, Julie Wilkin, Chris and Colleen Boucher, Kyle Cartner, Jesci Clark, Nicola Harbison, Peter Payne, Jade Martin, Kiera Mackay, Jean Poulter, Robert Ronald Gordon Mitchell, Stewart and Serina Fraser, Zena Standring and committee, Josie Anderson, Georgia Baker, Sarah Mitchell, Raymond Ebsworth, Wade Potter, Racquel Potter, Western Studio of Performing Arts Disney on Parade, Cobar Arts Council, Cobar Public School Spring Fair, Cobar High School MADD Night, 2008 Festival of the Miner’s Ghost, Cobar Business Association, and John Carswell.

Cobar tourism manager and Australia Day events coordinator John Martin said it was pleasing to see so many nominees for awards.

“The award selection committee is going to have a tough time picking winners, because every nomination is a worthy entry,” he said.
