Council looks to securing water for Nymagee’s future
Wednesday January 21, 2009
With Nymagee’s local water supply running dry before Christmas, Cobar Shire Council has used the opportunity to examine the empty tank with a view to cleaning it out and expanding the water storage.
Council’s general manager Ray Smith said the project is only in the investigation stage, with no money allocated in council’s current budget for the project.
Council staff along with a local surveyor recently visited the village.
Mr Smith said it is hoped the storage can be expanded from its current capacity of 10 megalitres to 30 megalitres.
“That would mean that if sufficient rain fell to fill the tank, it would provide Nymagee with around three years water supply,” Mr Smith said.
Council is also making enquiries with the Department of Water and Energy regarding possible funding for the project.
“We are probably looking in the vicinity of $175,000 to carry out the works,” Mr Smith said.
The matter is expected to be the subject of a full report to the first council works committee meeting of the year in February.
