Horse racing is expected to return to Cobar in 2009
Wednesday January 21, 2009
The Cobar Miners’ Race Club has secured a horse race meeting for May this year and all that’s left to do is to elect a new committee to run the event.
The club will hold their annual general meeting at the Services Club at 11am this Sunday and club secretary Maree Ellicott said they hoped to be able to fill all positions.
“I have given it a lot of thought and I have decided not to run for the position of secretary again,” Mrs Ellicott said.
Mrs Ellicott, who has held the position for more than 10 years said while she intended to step down from the secretary’s position, she would still be happy to offer her help to a new secretary.
“The job is just getting to be too hard for me living 60kms out of town.
“And with the drought worsening I have to spend more time here on the place.
“I love racing and race day and would still like to be involved but perhaps in a smaller way,” she said.
Mrs Ellicott said the race club’s secretary job was a busy one.
“We need to organise sponsorship, tents and the bar—lots of things that would be easier for someone who lived in town.”
