While many Australians may choose to watch the cricket (and the tennis) this Australia Day weekend, a number of locals will be indulging in another favourite Australian pastime, fishing.
The Louth Fishing Club is this year holding an Australia Day Fishing Competition and Carp Busting Weekend thanks to sponsorship from the Western Catchment Management Authority (CMA).
Louth Fishing Club president Ian McMaster said the club was delighted to welcome the Western CMA as the sponsors of the first event of this kind in Louth.
“There have been recent carp muster competitions in Bourke and Brewarrina but this is a first for Louth,” Mr McMaster said.
The Louth Fishing Club is a not-for-profit local organisation that was formed in 2007 to fundraise money for the purchase of Cod and Yellow belly fingerling to restock the Darling River in the Louth catchment areas.
“To date we have successfully released approximately 9,000 fingerlings under the Dollar-4-Dollar restocking scheme and will release another batch this weekend,” Mr McMaster said.
Rory Treweeke, the chair of WCMA
said the WCMA was pleased to be able to
play a part in the Australia Day activities at Louth.
“The Western CMA is pleased to be involved in activities that promote awareness of our fragile river systems and at the same time encourages the younger members in our catchment to participate in community activities,” Mr Treweeke said.
Mr McMaster said the children especially were encouraged to enter the competition, with lots of great prizes on offer.
“We hope this will be the beginnings of a love of recreational fishing for all involved,” Mr McMaster said.
