Cobar Shire Council has been granted $70,000 in federal government funding to build a new bicycle track along Lerida Road.
The funding was granted under the National Bike Paths Projects fund, a key element of the Economic Stimulus Plan.
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Anthony Albanese announced the successful funding application yesterday.
“We will provide this funding to the Cobar Shire Council for the Cycling Cobar – Lerida Road Bike Path project, which will construct a 2.4 kilometre off-road bicycle path to serve rural residential estates in Cobar.
“This project is worth $139,500, with the council providing the remaining funding.
“The Cobar bike path project will support
six jobs in the local economy during construction.
“Our Economic Stimulus Plan is about supporting local employment while delivering practical long term infrastructure for communities,” Mr Albanese said.
He said the project also supports healthy and active communities.
“We are building community infrastructure that will encourage healthier lifestyles amongst residents and create more sustainable communities,” Mr Albanese said.
Council applied for funding for the project after calls from residents along Lerida Road to improve safety for cyclists.
