Cobar State Emergency Service (SES) Unit members Gordon Hill and Ben Machul joined four members of the Broken Hill SES Unit in attending a Heavy Vehicle Rescue Workshop held in Dubbo last weekend.
The Dubbo workshop, which was one of a number conducted around the state by the SES, was aimed at showing personnel the most efficient techniques for stabilising and gaining entry into heavy transport trucks and tourist buses involved in accidents.
The two day workshop was attended by SES Unit members from across the Far West and Central west of NSW as well as representatives of the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and the NSW Fire Brigade.
Mr Hill said it was conducted at a well known transport repair facility in Dubbo, which allowed the workshop attendees to work with heavy trucks and buses which had been involved in accidents.
Mr Hill, who is the Cobar Unit Local Controller and a Road Crash Rescue Trainer, said that the opportunity to attend the workshop allowed the Broken Hill and Cobar Unit members to learn new techniques for heavy vehicle rescue, as well as sharing rescue experiences with members of other SES Units and rescue agencies who frequently attend heavy vehicle accidents on the various highways in the central west and far west of the state.
“The Cobar SES Unit attends a number of accidents involving heavy vehicles each year on the Barrier Highway and the Kidman Way which both run through Cobar,” Mr Hill said.
“The techniques and skills that Ben and I learnt during the workshop will be passed onto the other Cobar SES Unit members through the normal unit training program.
“These skills will prove invaluable to the Cobar Unit in the future when it attends these types of incidents,” he said.
