Hermidale was the place to be on Saturday for the sixth annual Hermidale Beach Volleyball competition, which attracted 11 teams competing for the $1,000 first prize money.

As Hermidale Beach Volleyball regulars, the Cobar side of ‘Tuwawa’, had refined their playing skills which gave them the edge over Alister Ewan’s ‘Sack Dragons’ team, also from Cobar, in the grand final. ‘Tuwawa’ won 10-7 to take the winner’s $1,000 prize purse.

“The day was a great success and raised much needed funds for the Hermidale Tennis Club to build a storage shed and the Hermidale Bush Fire Brigade for essential maintenance,” one of the day’s organisers, Hermidale resident Nano Moody said.

The two local Hermidale teams of ‘The Innovators’ and the ‘Old Hermidale Cricketers’ looked strong leading into the finals however the Cobar teams knocked them out to make it an all Cobar grand final game.

‘Tuwawa’ generously donated $500 of their winnings back to the organising committee and the ‘Sack Dragons’ also followed suit donating all of their $500 second prize winnings back.

“This generous offer by both teams is very greatly appreciated. With eight consecutive years of drought, fundraising in a small community is very hard,” Mrs Moody said.

“The consolation final was won by the Nyngan Hospital Team, also beach volleyball regulars, and it is great to see them take home some money.”

Apart from the volleyball, children were kept busy all day.

“When they weren’t swimming in Ocean Hermidale, they were competing in the sand castle competition sponsored by the Hermidale Outback Lodge, kids beach volleyball competition, message in a bottle and the buried treasure game,” Mrs Moody said.

The Coates Rubber Ducky Challenge, which required four team members to jump in a tractor tube, then run across the beach, through the ocean and back again, was also hilarious.

The Sack Dragons won that challenge and kindly donated back the $200 prize money.

With the lights from Coates Hire, Cobar, the entertainment continued well into the night with Karaoke.—contributed
