Golf Club and Nymagee cricket winners
Wednesday October 21, 2009
The second matches of the new senior cricket season were played last Saturday with Golf Club up against the RSL Club on the turf wicket at Ward Oval while the Ox Colts travelled to Nymagee to take on the Magpies.
This was Golf Club’s first game of the season, after having drawn a bye for their first game, and they have gotten off to a good start with an entertaining win over RSL and it was Golf Club’s first win in nearly two seasons of cricket.
RSL Club captain Geoff Potter won the toss and with a shortage of player numbers, he had no hesitation in sending his 10 man side in to bat first.
A veteran player, Potter led by example with the bat and top scored with 32.
Other RSL Club batsmen to make double figures were Clay Neale with 11 and Dylan Prince on 10.
Rob Fing was the pick of the Golf Club bowling attack taking four wickets for 21 runs off 10 overs. Fing was ably supported by Jason Milne (3/16), Rohan Lloyd (1/10) and Matt Crotty (1/6).
Golf Club didn’t have the best start, losing opening batsmen Andrew Buckman and Justin Negus in the second and third overs with the score at just nine.
However Fing, capping off a good all-round performance, scored 20 and John Hausia, who finished 30 not out, guided Golf Club to victory with the loss of only four wickets.
A highlight of Hausia’s innings was three big sixes from Shane Munro’s first over of bowling.
Wade Potter, Geoff Potter, Munro and Prince each took a wicket for RSL Club.
In the other match out at Nymagee, Ox Colts took on the defending premiers with Nymagee only able to field nine players.
Nymagee won the toss and elected to bat first and were all out for 197 from 35 overs.
Nymagee’s Phil Harley ran out of batting partners and was left at the crease 98 not out.
Other batsmen to make runs for Nymagee were Baden Smith (31), Roger Mitchell (21) and David Betts (11).
The best of the Ox Colts bowlers were Mal Hillier, with two wickets for 21 runs, Craig Tanke (2/37) and David Watson (2/51).
The Ox Colts’ run chase was halted early in their innings with the loss of representative players Stewart Fraser and Stephen Nicholson who were both dismissed for only four runs.
Hillier opened the batting and was still there at the end of the innings on 68 not out as the Ox Colts finished up all out for 144 from 29 overs.
This was Hillier’s highest score in Cobar cricket as it is also the first time in 11 seasons that an opening batsman has batted throughout an innings.
The next best batting efforts came from youngsters Slade Neale (13), Jayde Townsend (11) and Alex Fraser, who opened the batting, scored 11.
The best bowling figures were Wade Smith (4/44), Harley (3/34) and Mitchell Shields (2/35).—contributed
