Police are continuing to crack down on underage drinking in Cobar, fining an 18 year old for supplying alcohol to minors and investigating an incident where a minor entered a local licensed premises on the weekend.
The 18 year old was fined $1,100 after supplying alcohol to two 16 year olds who ended up in hospital due to severe intoxication.
The incident occurred last Monday when the 18 year old allegedly purchased the alcohol for the minors and charged them a ‘fee’.
The two minors then reportedly went camping and became intoxicated, however after a number of hours one of the minors called friends with concerns about the “severe intoxication” of the other 16 year old.
Senior Constable Sue Huggins said a parent of one of the minors was contacted and both 16 year olds were taken to hospital, where one was kept overnight due to the level of intoxication.
“Police were informed and the 18 year old was issued with an $1,100 fine for obtaining liquor for a minor from a licensed premises,” Senior Constable Budden said.
Police are also continuing their investigations into an incident on Saturday night where a 17 year old was removed from a licensed premises.
Senior Constable Sue Budden said the
17 year old was first asked to leave one
premises when staff recognised him as being underage.
“He then attended another licensed premises where police on patrol recognised him as a minor and removed him from the premises,” she said.
The 17 year old was issued with an infringement notice for the offence of ‘entering and remaining in the bar area of a hotel or club’, and he was fined $220.
“The matter is still being investigated, and staff at the licensed premises as well as the minor’s friends could be issued with possible infringements for supplying alcohol to a minor,” Senior Constable Budden said.
