Cobar’s A Grade crack Goal Shooter Lane Poland was heavily defended by the
Ungarie defence in their match at Ward Oval on Saturday.
The Cobar Blues A and B Grade netball teams had mixed results when they came up against Ungarie in the second round of the Northern Riverina League competition at Ward Oval on Saturday.
A Grade, after having a four goal lead at half time, lost to Ungarie 46-54 while the Blues B Graders came back from a two goal deficit at half time to win their match 35-27.
It was the first game of the season for the B Grade side, having received a round one forfeit from Lake Cargelligo, and it showed as the newly formed Cobar side played a nervous and tentative first quarter.
They did however manage to hold their
own and only trailed by one goal at the first break.
Ungarie returned to the court and posted first points and, for a time, the Cobar team was again somewhat ruffled but settled back into rehearsed play and found their way back into the game.
Goal Attack Ellie Russell overcame her first half nerves and regained her confidence, barely missing any shots in the second half from the front of goal.
Russell, and Goal Shooter Nicole Snudden, worked well with Centre Brittany Fugar and Wing Attack Chelsea Kershaw to take control of the second half and see Cobar through to an eight goals win.
Karlee Davis was a stand out player at Wing Defence and picked up both the Players’ Player and Coach’s awards.
And it was again a Cobar Wing Defence who stood out in the A Grade game with Sarah Irvine collecting the Players’ Player and Coach’s awards.
Coach Gerard Francisco said both players had played an “aggressive game”.
“They both showed an urgency to want the ball. This is what I want to see from the players every quarter, every week,” he said.
The A grade match was evenly matched in the first quarter.
Cobar then took a four goal lead with controlled play through the centre court along with solid defence from Vanessa Kurta at Goal Keeper and accurate shooting by Lane Poland in Goal Shooter.
Cobar, however, appeared to switch off in the final quarter while Ungarie powered on to finish strongly.
Their accurate, long range passes found their targets waiting under the ring and, with both Ungarie’s shooters having a near perfect record of goal shooting for the final quarter, Ungarie ran out 54-46 winners.
