Netballers come home with two wins

Wednesday July 22, 2009

The Cobar Blues A and B Grade netball sides bounced back in Saturday’s Round 13 of the Northern Riverina League Netball competition with both recording wins against the West Wyalong-Girral sides at West Wyalong.

After A Grade’s lacklustre performance last week against the bottom of the table Barellan side which ended in a draw, Cobar started Saturday’s game strongly against the fifth placed Bulldogs and had a 10 points lead at the end of the first quarter.

Their intensity slowed somewhat in the middle half of the game and they were outscored 17-15 by West Wyalong.

Their earlier lead coupled with a very strong final quarter however had them finishing confidently with a 40-26 win.

Goal Shooter Lane Poland picked up the Coach’s Award and Centre Tanya Huon was named Players’ Player.

Lisa Spinks put in her usual best effort and filled in at Goal Attack, while three B Grade players, Ellie Russell, Marybeth Baker and Sarah Irvine, stepped up to complete the depleted A Grade side which could only field five of its regular players.

After last week’s shock loss, the Cobar B Grade side went in to their game hungry for a win. B Grade was also missing a few players and the team got off to a shaky start to be down at quarter time 4-6.

Karleen Duell, who stepped up into the Centre position and acted as captain for the team, led by example and calmed the side which saw them playing their own game.

They picked up the pace and went to the half time break with a narrow 14-11 lead.

Great defence in the centre court by the Blues’ Wing Defence Simone Howard and Wing Attack Chelsea Kershaw allowed the Cobar side to convert a few key turnovers and finish the match leaders at 33–28.

Duell’s efforts earned her the Coach’s Award and Kershaw was the Players’ Player.

The teams head off to Tullibigeal this Saturday for the last game of the round,
where the A Grade team will be looking to comfortably cement their place in the finals, while the minor premier Cobar B Grade side will have a challenge on their hands as Tullibigeal comes into the game following two consecutive wins.

Tullibigeal will be keen to win and get the four points and finish second on the ladder behind Cobar heading into the finals. —contributed
